Mental health is very important to many people in and around this country. Millions of Americans live with various types of mental illness and mental health problems. Treatment options often include medication and psychotherapy. There are several categories of mental illness to include personality disorders, mood disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma and stressor related disorders, psychotic disorders and many more. Many of these disorders can be referenced in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5, APA, 2013). DSM is the most universal of modern classification systems for mental disorders. These are used by clinicians, therapist, social workers and other social service professionals to assess and assist in diagnosing individuals with various symptoms that meet the criteria of a diagnosis. So many people deal with the symptoms of mental illness and never are able to tell their story. In An Unquiet Mind, by Kay Redfield Jamison, she recounts her struggles with bipolar disorder and manic depression. She struggled with her disease for a number of years and it was uplifting on how she was finally able to come to terms with her illness and be able to manage it.
