Sexual Harassment at the Workplace
Skaine (1996) defines sexual harassment as ââ¬Å"unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual natureâ⬠¦when submission or rejection of this conduct explicitly affects an individualââ¬â¢s employment, unreasonably interferes with an individualââ¬â¢s work performance or creates an intimidating, hostile or offensive work environment â⬠(p. 11). The two types of sexual harassment identified by the law are quid pro quo and hostile environment. Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Sexual Harassment at the Workplace specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Quid pro quo refers to a condition where an employee is forced to provide sexual favors to an individual at a higher job rank in exchange of benefits at the workplace. On the other hand, hostile environment refers to a state where employees are harassed by offensive sexual behavior or any other act or state that intimidates a person sexually at the workplace (Geffner Braverman, 2005). Title VII of the Civil Rights Act protects employees against discrimination of any nature at the workplace. The Act protects employees from discrimination by their employees either in terms of gender, ethnicity, racial background, religion or any other form (Repa, 2010). The scenario being experienced at the workplace provides that members of staff are offended by the personal photos and calendars hung in the back of the kitchen that are sexual in nature. Some of these items have been given to the staff from suppliers. The objects hung do not belong to just one individual and are making the other staff members uncomfortable. The other staff members asked for the items to be taken down and have even taken them down themselves, but that has caused more items to be hung up in their place. From this scenario it is evident that the employees are offended by the pictures and this is a case of a hostile work environment. The rights of the employees have been violated yet they have the right to be protected from sexual harassment. In this scenario, sexual harassment is experienced by the employees and the kitchen manager should take action to protect the rights of the employees. As the kitchen manager I would ensure that all the complaints are dealt with immediately and appropriately. All pictures identified to cause sexual harassment should be removed and no more pictures of a similar kind should be displayed in future. It is good to discuss the issue with the employees and assure them that it is regrettable that such an offensive act has been happening and that a similar occurrence would not be experienced in future. A comfortable work environment is a right to all employees and it would be my duty to ensure that all employees are comfortable at the workplace. Moreover, injunction should be placed against suppliers providing materials which are offensive. To add on that, personal pho tos bearing offensive photos should be banned at the workplace.Advertising Looking for essay on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Sexual harassment consists of all environmental conditions at the workplace which are sexual in nature and are offensive. It is the responsibility of the management of the organization to ensure that all the employees are comfortable at the workplace. To avoid a similar occurrence in future, employees of the organization should have the freedom to express their grievances and to discuss matters that may affect them at the workplace. The Subject of Economics Personal Statement Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Subject of Economics - Personal Statement Example Apart from the theoretical knowledge that intrigued me during my school days, my aunt is also responsible for my liking for the subject. She is a businesswoman, working as an executive director in Li and Fung Trading Ltd, one of the largest trading logistics company in the world. Often my aunt and I used to discuss the business environment of Hong Kong as well as that of other nations where the company has its operation. These discussions molded my thought process and helped me to understand the manner in which economic condition of the domestic country affects the products and services that are offered by companies operating in its market. Such findings further increased my love for the subject and I finally realized that one should gather practical experience for understanding the operation of economics in the day to day life. I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to work in Li and Fung Trading Ltd during the summer of 2005. I was sent to Shanghai to work in one of the branches and to learn how a marketing company operates. There, I was assigned a variety of job responsibilities, like conducting paper works, customer dealing, accepting orders from customers and then forwarding them to the respective vendors. All these activities were sufficient for me to understand the manner in which a company operates. I also visited the factory of the vendors for quality inspection of the products that are supplied to the company. In brief, I had actively participated in the supply chain management of the company.

Laws and Regulations on Foreign Trade - Essay Example We have reached a stage when it is no longer possible to ask whether or not we should take part in globalization, but rather, what can we do to mitigate its possible risks (if any) and take advantage of its myriad benefits In the United States, however, especially during these times of recession, outsourcing has been a way out for companies to stay afloat. These companies want to take advantage of the cheap labor costs in the developing world, as well as the cheap resources. However, the problem is that the countries where these commodities and services are outsourced often do not have very stringent quality control standards. Many of them do not comply with basic environmental guarantees and health rules. The United States has very stringent policies with regard to environmental and health protection. Care must be given that harmful chemicals are not used in the commodities so that they do not pollute the atmosphere or compromise the health of those who purchase the product. However, when the production of the commodities is done outside the United States, then a number of problems surface. The regulations tend to be more relaxed, and since the workers are being paid less, it is hard to impose qualit y control and ensure consistency of outcomes. This paper will discuss two consequences of improper quality control standards that result from a lack of regulations. These are: environmental regulations, health regulations and labor regulations. The United States Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1970 and is responsible for setting and monitoring standards of pollution in both air and water, and hazardous wastes and chemicals. Its EPA regulations ââ¬â regulations which ensure compliance with the set environmental standards and procedures laid down by law ââ¬â see to it that corporations do not add to the pollution in the environment and do not cause a

12 Angery Men :: essays research papers
12 Angry Men Paper à à à à à The jury member I chose to do my paper on was Mr. Davis (the member who voted not guilty first), because he used many task messages, did not allow physical factors to affect his decisions, and was a successful emergent leader at some points in the case. These three points made Mr. Davis a very effective communicator. Using task messages made Davis effective because he kept the group moving along towards it’s goal. Not allowing physical factors into his decisions allowed him to make better choices. Being an emergent leader made Mr. Davis effective because he showed leadership when it was needed. Mr. Davis is an effective communicator because he used assorted task messages, did not allow physical factors into his decisions, and became an emergent leader at certain times in the discussion. à à à à à The first thing that made Mr. Davis an effective communicator was that he used many task messages. One type of task message he used was initiating. An example of this would be when he first voted not guilty and everyone else did, and had everyone tell him why they thought the boy was guilty. Another type of task message Mr. Davis used was gathering information. This would be when he asked everyone à à à à à at the table to give their opinion on why the boy was guilty or not. Although the task messages he used were the most obvious reasons why Mr. Davis was an effective communicator, another important point is that he did not allow petty physical factors into his judgment. à à à à à The second most obvious way in which Mr. Davis was an effective communicator was how he kept physical factors out of his decisions. One physical factor that he kept out his decisions was time. Some of the jury members allowed the time for discussion to affect their decisions, by wanting to get the case over with. Another physical factor Mr. Davis did not take into account was his personal goals. Unlike some of the other jury members, Mr. Davis wanted to find out if the boy really was guilty or not. The fact that Mr. Davis did not allow physical factors into his decisions was an important point, but equally important was how he emerged as a leader at critical points. à à à à à Another important part of Mr. Davis’ effective communication was how he arose as a leader during the case. One such time was at the beginning when Mr.
